The upcoming 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2024) will witness a slew of Chinese and international automakers debuting their latest and greatest models. Included in the star-studded list is Chery’s sub-brand Jaecoo, which is poised to unveil the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its SUV duo, the J7 and J8.
Embracing the vision of “Born for New Energy,” the upcoming J7 and J8 PHEVs will spearhead the marque’s new era of electrified off-roading vehicles. Similar to its fully ICE twins, both the J7 and J8 PHEVs would still use Jaecoo’s proprietary ARDIS all-wheel drive (AWD) system, offering up to seven driving modes for different off-roading scenarios.
On top of that, both the J7 and J8 PHEVs will also come with no less than five hybrid-derived driving modes, which include modes like all-electric, range extension, direct engine drive, energy recovery, and many more.
On the topic of powertrains, both the new PHEV models are set to use Chery’s new Kunpeng Super Hybrid C-DM system, based on the TJ-1 C-DM concept shown at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show. For the J7 PHEV, this PHEV setup will comprise a 1.5-litre 4-cyl turbocharged petrol mill rated at 154 HP and 220 NM, a hybrid-specific CVT automatic gearbox, as well as the aforementioned hybrid setup.
Although Jaecoo has yet to unveil official details regarding the J7’s PHEV setup, CarNewsChina reported that this PHEV SUV will boast a decent 120 KM of EV-only range, while its combined WLTP range is reportedly capped at 1,300 KM.
Unfortunately, we’re unable to retrieve any details regarding the J8 PHEV’s setup, although there’s a high possibility that the larger SUV would use the same 1.5-litre-based setup as its smaller sibling.
While there are no official visuals of both cars provided, we can assume that both the J7 and J8 PHEVs would retain the same look as their full-ICE twins both inside and outside. This means that we can expect both the upcoming PHEV SUVs to have the same level of luxury as their aforementioned twin, but at the same time still carry some real off-roading pedigrees.
As we mentioned earlier, both the upcoming J7 and J8 PHEVs will help to spearhead Jaecoo’s transition into a new energy off-road vehicle marque, in line with upcoming global expansion plans. Currently, Jaecoo is rapidly establishing a strong base in several international markets, including Malaysia, where the brand is actively expanding its local operations and creating strong impressions amongst the locals.
We can expect to learn more about both the upcoming Jaecoo J7 and J8 PHEV SUVs once they make their inaugural global debut at the upcoming Auto China 2024 motor show, happening later this week. For more updates on everything from Auto China 2024, be sure to stay tuned here at Caricarz.com…
